Physical Activity: A Healthy Habit for You and Your Pet

On World Physical Activity Day, discover how being active with your pet boosts your health and strengthens the bond between you both

World Physical Activity Day, celebrated on 6 April, is the perfect moment to remember that movement benefits everyone — including our pets. Dogs, cats and other companion animals also need regular physical activity to maintain a long, balanced and happy life.

More than just an exercise routine, being active with your pet is an opportunity for shared wellbeing, fun, and strengthening the bond between owner and animal.

Why is physical activity essential for pets?

Just like us, a lack of exercise in animals can lead to various health issues. Regular physical activity for pets helps to:

  • Prevent excess weight and obesity
  • Improve cardiovascular and joint health
  • Reduce destructive behaviours or anxiety
  • Stimulate the mind and combat boredom
  • Promote a more balanced and happy temperament

In dogs, daily exercise is essential. In cats, although they may seem more independent, physical activity is equally important to prevent a sedentary lifestyle and to stimulate their natural instincts for hunting and movement.

Physical exercise: a moment of connection

Walks, playtime and games are much more than simple exercise. They are moments of emotional connection, where your pet feels stimulated, safe and supported.

Some simple ideas to include physical activity in your routine:

  • Daily walks with your dog, adapted to their age and breed
  • Games such as fetch, running or obstacle activities
  • Interactive toys for cats
  • Short play sessions throughout the day
  • Exploring new routes and environments

The key is to respect your pet’s limits and make exercise a positive experience.

Active pets, healthier owners

Having a pet is also a natural motivation to stay active. Studies show that dog owners, for example, tend to be more physically active. In other words, the health of both pet and owner go hand in hand.

Looking after your pet’s health involves a balanced diet, regular veterinary care and, of course, consistent physical activity. Small daily moments of play can make a big difference to your pet’s quality of life.

Because an active pet is a happy pet — and a present, engaged owner makes all the difference.
