Discover the best strategies to help your dog develop good habits from the very first days.
Teaching a dog to relieve itself in the correct place requires patience, consistency and positive reinforcement. With a well-defined routine, the process becomes simpler and more effective.
1) Establish a routine
Puppies learn through repetition. Always take your puppy to the same place:
after waking up;
after meals;
after playing;
before going to sleep.
The more consistent the routine is, the faster the puppy will understand where it should relieve itself.
2) Always choose the same place
While your puppy cannot go outside, use a training pad or a specific area of the house. Afterwards, make the gradual transition to outdoors.
3) Reward correct behaviour
Whenever the dog relieves itself in the right place, praise it and offer a reward. Positive reinforcement speeds up learning.
You can use dog snacks (link to the junior one) as a reward during training.
4) Avoid punishment
Accidents are part of the process. Instead of punishing the dog, clean the area and continue teaching calmly and consistently.
Why is it important to teach from an early age?
Creating this routine helps to:
keep the house clean;
reduce accidents;
make learning easier;
strengthen the relationship between owner and dog.
Although learning depends mainly on consistency and positive reinforcement, quality nutrition also contributes to well-being and the creation of a daily routine. Puppies fed a complete and balanced food tend to establish more regular meal times and, consequently, more regular times to relieve themselves.
At PetMaxi, you will find foods developed specifically for puppies, formulated to support this important stage of growth and development.
