Easter with pets at home: dangerous foods and precautions to take

How to celebrate the festive season safely and protect your pets’ health

Easter is synonymous with togetherness, sweet treats and beautifully laid tables. But when there are pets at home, this season calls for a little extra care.

Many traditional Easter foods, although harmless to us, can be harmful or even dangerous for dogs and cats.

What should never go in your pet’s bowl

During Easter, do your best to prevent your pet from accessing:

  • Chocolate – contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats
  • Almonds, cakes and sweets – high in sugar and fat
  • Folar and yeasted doughs – difficult to digest
  • Seasoned food – garlic, onions and salt are harmful to pets
  • Alcohol – even small amounts are dangerous

Even “just a small bite” can be enough to cause vomiting, diarrhoea or general discomfort.

Watch out for eggs… and packaging

Chocolate eggs are especially tempting to animals, not only because of the smell but also the packaging. Foil, plastics and ribbons can cause choking or intestinal blockages.

Small precautions that make all the difference

  • Keep sweets and food out of reach
  • Remind family and guests not to feed the pet
  • Maintain your pet’s regular feeding routine
  • Keep safe, pet-friendly treats on hand

This way, everyone can take part in the celebrations safely.

A calm Easter is also a responsible Easter.

Celebrating with pets at home doesn’t mean giving up traditions, but adapting them. With a bit of care and simple choices, you can ensure a happy Easter for the whole family – including your four-legged members.
