An important reminder on this Chocolate Day: this treat is toxic to animals every day of the year.
Although chocolate is harmless and even beneficial for humans, it is toxic to dogs and cats. The substances responsible for this toxicity are theobromine and caffeine, found in higher amounts in dark and powdered chocolate.
Even in small doses, chocolate can cause severe poisoning, especially in dogs, who tend to eat everything they find. Symptoms usually appear 6–12 hours after ingestion and the most common include:
Vomiting and diarrhea
Excessive thirst
Agitation or tremors
Accelerated heart rate
In severe cases: seizures and risk of death.
➡️ A small portion can be enough to cause harm, especially in small pets.
⚠️ The darker the chocolate, the greater the danger.
Poisoning can happen year-round, but we use this symbolic date – World Chocolate Day (July 7) – to reinforce the warning: always keep sweets out of your pet’s reach.
If you suspect your dog or cat has eaten chocolate, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Contact your veterinarian immediately.
