How to promote a good relationship between them
Dogs and cats can live together in peace—yes, really!
Although there's a common belief that they are natural enemies, dogs and cats can absolutely coexist peacefully when the introduction is done correctly. With a few simple strategies, your home can become a calmer and happier place for everyone.
If you already have a dog and are thinking of adopting a cat (or vice versa), here’s how to ease their adaptation:
1. Introduce the dog and cat gradually
The first meeting should be calm and supervised. Let them get to know each other at their own pace. Keep in mind: dogs are generally more playful and social, while cats prefer to maintain their space and control.
2. Divide your attention equally between the two
It’s important to give both the dog and the cat fair attention, especially in the early days of cohabitation. If one pet feels neglected, jealousy or competitive behavior may emerge.
3. Use positive reinforcement to improve cohabitation
Associate their interactions with pleasant experiences. Offer treats, toys, or affection when they are together. This helps build positive associations. In more challenging cases, training or behavioral support may be helpful.
4. Create separate spaces for each pet
Each animal should have its own bed and/or designated area. This prevents conflict, particularly when you’re not around to supervise.
5. Pheromone diffusers help with adaptation
These products can reduce stress but must be species-specific. Always consult your vet before using them.
